Design Intent

“Architecture that compresses noise and distraction, returning domestic living to light, breeze and stillness.”

Quiet materials. Natural light. Everyday rituals.

Spatial Narrative & Indian Context

Courtyard House explores the intimate relationship between modern architecture and the ancient domestic rituals of living in northern India. Rather than treating the courtyard as an isolated decorative void, the layout establishes it as the central thermodynamic engine and experiential core of the residence.

Rooms are sequenced with measured compression and release: a discreet, shaded entry vestibule gives way to luminous double-height family spaces that wrap around an open-air central court. Large pivoting glass panels blur the threshold between interior rooms and the verdant interior garden.

Passive micro-climate conditioning was a primary driver. By harnessing the stack effect through the courtyard and strategically angling high-level clerestories, ambient temperatures within the residence are significantly moderated during dry northern summers.
